Moving to the Upper West Side means pre-war apartments, no in-unit laundry, steam heat that runs too hot in winter, and some of the best access to parks and transit in Manhattan. Here's the practical checklist for getting settled — including the logistics most new residents figure out slowly, the hard way.

Laundry — Figure This Out Before You Unpack

Most Upper West Side apartments don't have in-unit washers and dryers. Pre-war buildings weren't built with washer hookups, and adding them requires board approval in most cases. If your building has shared laundry in the basement, you're ahead of many neighbors. If it doesn't, you have two options.

Option one: find your nearest laundromat and accept the 90-minute weekly commitment. Option two: set up laundry pickup and delivery through the app and never think about it again.

Green Clean Laundromat operates out of 981 Columbus Ave on the Upper West Side and delivers across all of Manhattan. Wash and fold is $1.70/lb with free pickup, free delivery, no minimums, and a free first order. Schedule through the app in under 30 seconds, leave your bag, get everything back folded within 24 hours.

Set this up the first week. It removes a recurring logistics problem before it becomes a habit.

Groceries — Know Your Options Early

The Upper West Side has better grocery access than most of Manhattan, but the stores serve very different purposes. Knowing the rotation saves time.

  • Zabar's (80th & Broadway): A UWS institution for smoked fish, prepared foods, and cheese. Worth a visit but not your everyday store.

  • Trader Joe's (72nd & Broadway): Perpetually crowded on weekends — go on a weekday morning or use Instacart. The value is hard to beat.

  • Fairway Market (74th & Broadway): Wide selection and good produce. Slightly higher prices but excellent for specialty items.

  • The Associated (Amsterdam Ave): Underrated for quick trips. Lower prices than most options, no lines.

  • Westside Market: Good for off-hours when everything else is closed. Open late.

Subway — Use the B and C

The Upper West Side is served by the 1, 2, and 3 trains on Broadway and the B and C trains on Central Park West. Most new residents default to the 1 train. Most experienced UWS residents take the B or C when they can.

The B and C are express trains during rush hour and significantly faster to Midtown and the West Village. The 72nd Street and 86th Street stations on Central Park West are two of the most useful stops in the neighborhood.

Heat and Air Conditioning

Pre-war UWS apartments run on steam heat, which is centrally controlled by your building. You don't set a temperature — the heat comes on when the building turns it on, and it runs hot. You will open a window in February. This is normal.

Buy a humidifier before your first winter. Steam heat is extremely dry and will affect your sleep and sinuses within the first month. A good humidifier is one of the best quality-of-life investments for an UWS apartment.

For air conditioning: window AC units are standard. If you're moving in during spring or summer, get your unit installed before July. The city gets hot fast, and last-minute AC installation books out.

Noise — Prepare for It

Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue are active streets. Amsterdam Avenue in particular has bus traffic running through the night. If your apartment faces the street on a lower floor, plan accordingly.

A white noise machine and blackout curtains solve most of it. Garbage collection runs at 4am on many blocks. Street-facing bedrooms above the 6th floor are significantly quieter.

Dry Cleaning

Green Clean Laundromat handles dry cleaning through the same pickup and delivery workflow as wash-and-fold. You don't need a separate trip or service — flag dry cleaning items in the app when you schedule your pickup and they come back with everything else.

Riverside Park

Most new UWS residents spend their outdoor time in Central Park. Riverside Park is equally good and significantly less crowded. It runs along the Hudson River from 72nd Street to 153rd Street — 330 acres of waterfront, running paths, playgrounds, and views.

The 79th Street Boat Basin and the area around 91st Street are particularly good on weekends. Go west.
